STORYLINE

High in the Stara Planina mountain at Karandila place some 250 kms (156 miles) east of the Bulgarian capital Sofia an annual Karakachani festival is taking place. The Karakachani, is a Greek minority ethnic group who chose Bulgaria for their home, they gather annually to celebrate their traditional culture and share it to Bulgarian people and all visitors to their festival.

The Karakachani are an ethnic Greek minority group of shepherds inhabiting Greece and neighbouring countries. Historically centered around the Pindus, mountains, Greece they have been currently urbanised to a significant degree.

Karakachani - also known as Sarakatsani - are a people living in northern Greece, Albania, Macedonia and Bulgaria, traditionally leading a semi-sedentary life connected to herding.
